The Normal - Warm Leatherette

Its a slow news day and I cant seem to muster the energy to write anything of substance. Plus its the weekend, so I thought Id throw some random tunage your way. Theyre all so good that they… (in post Fever for cowbell from Rock Sellout. Download this at Amazon iTunes)

The use of backing tracks is not only for karaoke singers but for performing artists too. If you are in a band of any sort then this information is for you to help take your act to the next level. Especially if you're performing in some sort of tribute act or cover band.

For years I've been singing and playing in various rock bands and for the greater part have been very well received in front of audiences. Up until not too long ago I would be inclined to pick songs that we performed based on how accurately we could represent that song from a stage. That is, could we cover all the required parts that make a song a hit and do it justice. Every so often a song would come along that required keyboards that were so important in the song that the song was just not worth doing without it. We wouldn't be able to do it justice. So, rather than ruin the song we would put it on the shelf as a song we wished we could do. I didn't see the sense in hiring a full time keyboard player to play in 20% of the songs at best so it made more sense to not do the song.

As the time went on of course I joined a band that was using backing tracks to cover piano parts in songs and even complex backing vocals and instantly realized what those tracks are worth to a performer. That meant that the very difficult backing vocals could be spot on every time and the back up singers could sing easier lines when playing live, giving the back ups a lot of depth. It also meant of course that the music was greatly enhanced. The average audience member doesn't really pick up on a band using tracks. All they realize is this band sounds far better than the band last week but don't really know why. The answer is in the tracks. The lead singer can harmonizie to his own voice more easily than someone else can do it so he should be the one getting recorded. Be careful not to put in too much though or you risk the show becoming a karaoke act.

An important point to consider is what to do if you have technical problems. You need to have a way out. You have to know your show. I've been onstage and had the monitor system fail and not been able to hear the backing tracks and had to rely on the drummer keeping proper time. Using the tracks he has a click track in his left ear he should at least be able to keep time. He gets the click from a pre-recorded track that has a click track on one side and the song sample on the other side. Using a small mixer on stage he can send the music the main mixing console and nobody in the audience will hear the click track.

Using backing tracks are a great way to give your show a very competitive edge and set you apart form the rest of the bands in your circuit, area, etc. I will always use them now and am happy to because all the songs that I put on the shelf in the years gone by can now be done properly.

Sarah Perrotta - Into Bloom

Sarah Perrotta is a singer/song-writer out of Hudson Valley, New York. I assume she found me after I had done a post on Quitzow. Perrotta was part of a band Outland Dreamer. She currently plays with Tony Levin… (in post Sarah Perrotta - The Well Review from Allan's World Music. Download this at Amazon iTunes)

One of the most prolific composers was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who wrote music for several instruments including the clarinet. The clarinet is an instrument that belongs to the family of the woodwind. It is comprised of four hollow pieces of ebony, a barrel, upper and lower joints and a bell, which fit together to make a musical assemblage.

Clarinet sheet music is different than other r sheet music, since the clarinet has a limited tone production. Unlike the piano, which is called the "mother" of all instruments, the clarinet is distinguished between various types of flats. In music, a flat is used to reduce the semitone that produces a lower pitch. The clarinet needs that flat to accommodate its performance and play. There are various kinds of clarinets found including the E Flat, Bass and Alto B Flat, A Major, A Flat, C Major and D Flat. Most people prefer the B Flat clarinet.

Orchestras use clarinets according to the type of music they intend to play. Clarinets cannot be used to play all notes on a regular music sheet. They need to have special music sheets that contain clarinet notes. The B Flat sheet music is specifically written to contain notes that can be played in that style. Clarinet sheet music is very specific, and yet players can play high notes that may not be on the sheet music or "music score."
Today, clarinet sheet music is played in various styles of music -- namely classical, jazz and gospel. A clarinet player must remember the type of music, as every style has its own notes, description and forma. With growing computer software programs, clarinet music is now available on the Internet and can be downloaded and played.

If you are like many people, you have long contemplated learning to play the guitar.
If for whatever reason you have not learned yet, it would be wise for you to remember
that there is no time like the present to learn to play. All of the rockstars and
famous musicians have one thing in common with you ... they all had to learn the key
steps for learning to play the guitar somewhere along the line. A good guitar guide is
just the first step.

There are three fundamental lessons that you must learn in order to be able to play the
guitar well. This will allow you to begin playing real music on your guitar even while
you are still learning to play well and improving your guitar playing. The three lessons
are strumming and picking, tuning and chords.

Some people strum the guitar and others pick the strings. Some guitar players will combine
the two methods in order to enhance their range of skills and the types of music that
they can play well. Strumming usually involves raking your thumb across one or more of the
guitar strings gently causing it to vibrate and create sound. Picking is when individual
strings are plucked. Good guitar players can combine the two often at the same time. However,
you need to learn how to do both separately before you concern yourself with combining
the two guitar playing methods.

Tuning the guitar will be important if you want the guitar music to sound right. If you are
playing the guitar alone, you will not have to tune your guitar perfectly but if you are playing
in a band or with other people, you will have to be certain that all of the musical instruments
are in tune with each other. If not, then it is not very likely that the resulting cacophony of
noise will be confused with real music.

Learning the chords will be important so that you can produce the proper tones to match the other
musicians or if you are just learning, so you can learn practicing the guitar by playing real music
instead of endless days of playing musical scales. Learning to play the guitar by playing real
music will allow you to impress your friends and make the entire guitar-learning process much more
enjoyable for you. Finding a good guitar guide will help you to learn the basics and make playing
guitar music immediately possible.

Like many people you may have had a long standing interest in learning an instrument. However, if you are also like most people you maintain an extremely full schedule. On a daily basis you may find that you barely have time to eat and sleep let alone to enroll in or take guitar lessons. With that in mind, you may have found yourself wondering whether you can learn guitar online.

The fact is that at this point in time there are a variety of options available to you when it comes to playing guitar online. In other words there are websites operating on the Net that offer you the chance to take guitar lessons. Therefore, when it comes to the subject of guitar lessons online, the subject simply is not availability. Rather, the subject is whether these online guitar lessons actually are effective.

The major drawback associated with online guitar lessons is that you do not have an in person instructor guiding you along. Therefore, you have to be the kind of person who can learn without the direct guidance of another person providing you direction in person as you go along.

Perhaps in the final analysis, you might want to consider combining guitar lessons online with at least some practice or lesson time in the brick and mortar world with another person. In this regard, you have two primary tracks that you can follow.

First, you can participate in some real world lessons combined with the time that you spend online learning the guitar. Many people have found this duel approach to be a very good way of learning to play the guitar.

Second, another tactic that you might want to employ is taking guitar lessons online but to find a partner you can practice with in the real world. What you might want to consider doing is taking guitar lessons online with another individual. You both can garner important lesson information from the Net. After you have done so, you can schedule time to practice the guitar together. A growing number of people are taking this approach to great effect and with solid results.

Third, when it comes to taking guitar lessons online, you will want to look for a program that offers a multi-dimensional approach to learning to play the guitar. By this it is meant that you will want to look for a program that offers a variety of tools through which you can learn to play the guitar.

This can include such things as videos that you can watch online and so forth. By having a variety of tools available to you online you will be in the best possible position to be able to make great progress in your efforts to learn to play the guitar through guitar lessons online.

Fourth, when it comes to guitar lessons online, you may want to keep an eye out for a program that allows you the ability to join in forums and chat rooms at the website that sponsors the guitar lessons. Being able to chat and discuss with other students can be an invaluable experience when you are taking guitar lessons today. Sites that offer this type of exchange and experience are few and far between today. However, there is growth in this area and you will want to keep your eyes open for such an option.

Finally, you need to keep in mind that guitar lessons online can be a very convenient experience for you. If you are like most people, the fact that online guitar lessons are so convenient, this may be the best choice for you because of your busy schedule.

OK I have tried to stay away from posting this but its just too damn good. Remember kidsrespect the copyright of others and delete this file after 24 hrs. The file is only for sampling.and that doesnt mean… (in post My Medicine from White Folks Get Crunk. )

Origin:

Rumba has two origins: Spanish as well as African. Rumba was first danced by African slaves as early as the 16th century. The Rumba folk dance had sexual connotations with the male having a sexually agressive attitude and the female having a deffensive attitude. It gaining popularity in Latin America in the 1920s.

Music:

Like Salsa, Rumba music is played in 4/4 but the music is much slower at just over 100 bpm. Traditionally, Rumba is danced on the second beat with a pause on the first beat although American style Rumba is danced on the first beat. The forth beat is usually accentuated.

Dance:

Rumba is primarily a sex pantomime. The hip movements are quite exaggerated, especially for the men. The men have a sexually agressive attitude in the dance and the women have a sexually deffensive attitude. The women usually dance with a hankerchief in their hands which is waved in front of the body enticing the men, but when the men react the women quickly "cover up". Traditionally, the men "attack" with their hips by getting very close to the women, but some variations allow men to "attack" with other parts and from a distance!

Latinos NZ Popularity Scale: 3/10

Rumba is not a very popular dance in New Zealand's Latin clubs, primarily because Kiwis are fairly reserved on the dance floor. But, as more and more dancers learn the dance it is definitely becoming more popular!

Rumba is the dance of love and sex. So, don't be scared to have some fun!

Piano Improvisation Tips - Enjoy the Process First!

"I'm having problems staying with the music," wrote one student. "I can't seem to get it. What I mean is, I get stuck or blocked only after a few seconds of improvising. What can I do?"

The above complaint is a very common problem among newbies at improvisation. They don't understand how to keep an improvisation going. Why? Because they have it backwards!

You're not supposed to keep an improvisation going. No. That's the wrong approach to improvisation. The right approach is to let go of your need to control the outcome. Then and only then will your intuition come to your aid.

Listen, you may want to create something beautiful on the piano, but it is exactly your desire that is creating blocks! How? Because the ego is never satisfied and wants a perfect music, a good music, or something that will satisfy it. The ego is insatiable and is never satisfied.

That's why when you focus on and enjoy the process of improvising, you free yourself from this trap.

Many of us are obsessed with creating a product. Something we can be proud of and show off to friends and family. Look, there's nothing wrong with wanting to have something you can call your own, but when you are only concerned with creating the end result, your creative self (inspiration) will dry up and leave you feeling empty.

But, if you put process over product, not only will you enjoy the whole experience more, the outcome will be far superior to any forced ego product you may end up having.

To enjoy the act of making music, we must let up on ourselves and adapt an attitude of exploration. We must allow for mistakes and listen for where the music itself wants to go. This idea may be strange to some of you. I can understand that but once you really let go of trying to control the outcome, wonderful things begin to happen!

Recording Guitar

Recording guitar is one of the most challenging arts that any recording engineer would have to master -- Well, that used to be...

There was a time when for you to record an acoustic guitar, you needed to get special mics called condenser mics (And at that, you needed specific types and models for best results). Then you needed to master the art of placing them at distances that will capture as much of the entire spectrum of sound produced as possible.

And if you know a thing or two about how sound is produced by the acoustic guitar, you'll agree with me that the entire length of the guitar's neck, the sound hole and the vibrations from the guitar's body have to be taken into account.

To say the least, only the very best engineers could get really great recordings of acoustic guitars.

There also used to be a time when no self respecting audio engineer would even consider recording an electric guitar without getting the best guitar amp he can lay hold of, crank up the volume and place a rugged dynamic mic (sometimes a padded condenser mic is also used) close to the speaker grille in order to get a great guitar cut.

But all that has changed now...

With electric acoustic guitars, you can get the best of acoustic guitar sound onto your recording without understanding even the most basic laws of sound waves. All you need to do would be to get specially designed electric acoustic guitars, plug in and hit "record" and you have a great acoustic sound for real. And the best part is: You won't even need a sound proof space for sound capture. You can record beside a freight train and still get your great recording.

How about the electric guitar...

with the introduction of great tools from companies like Line 6 you can record a great guitar solo without freaking out the neighbors and without paying big bucks for a studio session.

For some of the really cool tools for electric guitar recording, all you need is just a usb-enabled computer. Just that and you'll be churning out solos that will make Jimi Hendrix roll in his grave for envy.

And the coolest part of these new tools is that you don't really need to take a second mortgage in order to get them.

10 People to Surround Your Band With

No man-or band-is an island. The success of any musician is the cumulative effort of many people. As you set out to become a legend, there are ten people you want to surround yourself and your band with. Whether you hire these folks, or simply find them and build a mentoring relationship with them-they have the expertise you need to get where you want to be: on top.

1. Stylist

Stylists aren't just for corporate bands. Someone who is an expert in style and public opinion can give you an objective view about how other people see you. Talk to a stylist about your overall sound and the vision of your band and get some feedback about ways you can express that with your on-stage appearance.

2. Graphic Designer

A graphic designer is going to be able to help you design your "brand". That can include everything from your website design, to your t-shirt graphics and your album cover. These are items that make a huge impression on people long before they have a chance to hear your music. Most graphic designers appreciate it when you bring them solid ideas and examples of things that inspire you. The more direction you can give them, the easier it will be for them to provide you with a finished product you'll love.

3. Recording Techs

Live music and recorded music are two entirely different animals. You may have a great live sound, but if you're going to make any money off your music, it needs to be recorded-and recorded well. Your MP3s can be placed on your website and circulated around the globe, so you want them to be the best possible representation of your band. Add to that the fact that recording time is so expensive, and mistakes can cost you time and money. It's easy to see how important it is to find people who know their way around a mixing board.

If you can, ask other bands who they have helping them with the technical aspects of their recording. Or, you may place an ad and interview people who will help you in your session. Even if you use studio staff-don't go in blindly and expect perfection in only a couple hours. Try to meet with the technical staff before you record and give them some idea what your expectations are. You may also want to hang out on some music industry message boards and get informed on techniques and terminology so that you can communicate what you really want when you get in to the studio.

4. Other Bands

Don't look at other bands as competition. Each group is unique and has something different to offer. Each band has its own personality. You can co-exist peacefully with bands and find they are your best allies as you try to establish yourself. No one else knows what you are going through like another up-and-coming band. If you can find musicians who have more experience than you or who have already achieved success, try to form a mentoring relationship with them and let them help you through the landmines that take down so many young bands.

5. Groupies

No, I'm not talking about Tawny Kitaen. I'm talking about Classic Groupies-girls (and even guys) who are loyal fans. These are people who will be at every show, wear your t-shirt until it falls apart, and tell everyone they meet how great you are. These people will develop in to an entourage-they create a party wherever they go-even if it is just waiting in line to buy your tickets. They are an asset, and a time-honored tradition on the road to success.

6. Web Guru

The internet is where you're going to be marketing yourself for the rest of the century, so you might as well get comfy there. No one expects you to be a geek, but you should definitely have an in with a geek to can help you establish yourself online. A web guru is going to be well-versed in web design and implementation, have technical skills for generating web traffic and search-engine optimization, and an eye on anything new that you can latch on to and use. Not only do you want a professional website, but you want to appear web savvy; which means using online tools and giving your fans access to those tools, too.

7. Business Advisor

Most musicians are terrible businesspeople. That makes having a business advisor all the more important. Whether you hire someone, or simply have a trusted friend with a business background give you some pointers, it is absolutely essential to have someone with a business mind help you make the most of your money. That means managing any income you have from gigs, album sales, or merchandise. It means planning a budget for the band, and knowing where and how to invest wisely.

8. Club owners

People that own clubs can give you great opportunities to perform live-but they can also give you added perspective and the experience that comes from seeing musicians perform on a regular basis. A club owner, if they befriend you, can provide you with all kinds of information including warnings of pitfalls they've seen bring other bands down. They know their own club or bar better than anyone else and they can tell you how to optimize your performance's sound and appearance. They can tell you which nights are the best to book, and what kind of crowd to expect. They have their finger on the pulse of the music scene from a business perspective and can give you highly specialized information to make the most of your shows.

9. Friends and Family

Your friends and family are the people who believe in you more than anyone else. They are going to stick by you through ups and downs, successes and discouragements. They are a ready-made army of marketers who will tell the world how great you are with total conviction. Don't alienate yourself from these folks. Let them put your name out there, and let them share in the victory when you get recognition.

10. Radio DJs and Press People

These guys have the ability to promote you in ways you cannot imagine. Most radio stations have featured staff picks on their shows, and radio DJs and music journalists also keep blogs on their company websites. If they make it to your show and like it, they're going to tell thousands of people. Take the initiative and seek out DJs on stations that play music similar to yours and press people who cover music in your area. Send them CDs and invite them to your shows. Offer to give them an interview for their blogs and ask them to share their experience with you.

How To Produce A Great Drum And Bass Track

From its humble beginnings on the london rave scene in the early 90's, when breaks were innocently looped instead of sequenced, and vocals pitched up instead of timestrecthed, to the present day, it has always been at the cutting edge of electronic musical innovation. Much of the scene's early output was characterised by a total disregard for the conventions, techniques and rules of the day (largely because none of the producers knew what they were), while todays producers are among the most skilled, meticulous and innovative there are. But the common thread is a determination to rinse it, and rinse it in even more ingenious ways.
As the production bar in drum 'n' bass has been rased on an almost seasonal basis, it's taken the learning curve with it. Even producers who don't like the genre will often sit and marvel at the complexity and density of modern DnB productions. Also drum 'n' bass has a distinct sound, and it places emphasis on different areas of the mix to other genres, so that even producers in other types of electronic music can struggle to achieve that DnB vibe.

20 MUST KNOW DRUM 'n' BASS TIPS

1- Layering chopped up break beats (DRUM LOOPS) is a good way to get that authentic DnB sound. For a tight, modern sound, put each hits end point before the next drum sound occurs: simply leaving the end point at the end of the sample makes it easier to program junglistic beats, but you'll either have to tune or time stretch it to make sure it plays at the correct tempo.

2- One of the main advantages of using really tightly chopped beats is that you can easily pitch bend your drum part up and down without it ever going out of time. This technique can be used to create stunning percussive effects. For the best results try combining this method withother forms of processing such as filtering or degrading effects.

3- If your track's switch lacks bite, try using a different break beat or rythm pattern to keep the crowd on their toes, processing such as pitch shifting or flanging can do miracles here.

4-When using heavy compression on your rythm track for that fat break beat sound, you may find that your beat gets overpowered when a big kick drum sound is triggered. Consider putting any such sound on a seperate channel with its own compression. If your kick drum needs enhancing, try beefing it up with a layered TR-909 kick drum sample, but resist the urge to turn it up too loud, make sure the sub bass and beat still have enough room to breath.

5-By using a variety of layered re-programmed breakbeats, you can quickly build up a complex rythm track. The trick is to make it sound like one cohesive part that develops and builds, rather than several different parts all fighting for space. The golden rule is to accurately program your drums in the first place, although additional EQing of flabby kick drums, cymbals and hihats may help reign in errant beats.

6- For those liquid funk moments, a housey organ bass always sounds great. You can make your own using sine, pulse or triangle waves low-pass filtered until you get just a few harmonics poking through. Try detuning one oscillator up seven semitones for a handy fifth that will bring back some old school memories.

7- These days it seems everyone is rockin the saw wave lead. This sound is easy to create - short attack and release envelope, a little chorus or pitch modulation on the saw wave and your there. Things can be made more interesting with a little degrading effect, and a bit of glide can add an interesting twist to your nasty lead noise.

8- For artificial intelligence style warbling synth lines, an LFO tied to the filter cutoff is your best bet. Make sure the LFO's phase is synced to the start of the note and try a variety of rates and phase positions until you come up with a suitable noise. Experiment using different wave shapes, LFO amounts and filter cutoff settings, and try further developing the sound with a little LFO based pulse modulation.

9- When using 'real' instrument samples or presets, it's important that they sit comfortably alongside your more processed sounds. If possible, create reverb and delay send effects so you can place all your sounds in the same virtual space. Along with good playing or sequencing, reverb can disguise synthesized reverb sounds. For an even more pronounced effect, try applying a reverb pre-fader soundscape style effects.

10- Make more sophisticated arpeggiator leads by applying frequency or pulse width modulation envelopes to the sound and varying the decaytime. High-pass work well with this style of sound. When filter sweeping the sound in or out, try automating another synth setting, such as one of the envelopes decay time or filter envelope amount. For a trancey sound, delay is a must, but don't make it too extreme or you may mask any chord changes.

11- Now days, most virtual analogue synths feature a massive amount of wave shapes for you to experiment with. Instead of using a sine wave, try a variety of different wave shapes and low-pass filter them to remove all but the lowest frequencies. This will give you a sub bass with more interest than a standard sine tone, which can be enhanced further with tube amplification and other effects.

12- A proper sub bass is all important when creating DnB tracks. In order to create the desired wall of sound effect, the bassline has to hit the low end of the frequency spectrum. The easiest way to create a sub bass is to use a sine wave with a very short attack time and quick release. Try using this sound to double the lead part, thereby adding beef, but remember to watch the levels, as you can have too much of a good thing.

13- Another classic DnB sound is that of the 'Reece' bassline, as used in Renegade Feat Ray keith's Terrorist. While it's unlikely you'll get in trouble for sampling this much loved tone, you can create your own version by layering up detuned square waves with a touch of low pass filtering. This can then be resampled and further processed to create your own fearsome basslines.

14- Another good way to keep the energy levels up on a switch is to introduce a kick drum roll underneath the main beat.

15- To create the familiar wah-bass effect you'll need a synth with a an oscillator set to a wave shape with at least a few harmonics (ie, not a sine or triange), filtered with a low pass filter. An LFO or, alternatively, a short attack and decay envelope, can control the cutoff of the filter. When using an envelope, the note must be retriggered quickly to create the undulating bass riff.

16- Variation can be added to wah-bass riffs by modulating the LFO speed or envelope amount via key-following, eg, the higher the note played on the keyboard, the quicker the LFO oscillates or the more envelope is applied to the filter cutoff. Try varying amounts of one or both of these techniques to create progressively more twisted bass flutters.

17- When adding overdrive effects to filters, try out the different distortion types available and experiment with varying amounts of your chosen effect. Using vast amounts of overdrive may sound menacing, but in the context of a track, less is often more. Try starting out with a small amount of distortion and increase the levels slowly until you reach the optimum settings for your sound. The key is experimentation!

18- Another parameter that requires judicious tweaking when creating distorted bass noises is resonance. While it's very tempting to crank everything up to the most ear bending levels, try to stick to subtler settings- the highest db filter won't necessarily sound the best. Experiment with a combination of filter types and resonance settings until you get just enough harshness to offset the, rumbling bass end.

19- If your using an LFO to create your wah-bass, there are a couple of options available to you. Syncing the LFO to the track is a convenient way of getting it to play in time, but you may find the flexibility of the LFO rate control is worth making use of instead. Try any alternative phase and shape settings to create a variety of sounds.

20- Try using your synth or samplers pitch envelope to automatically bend notes downward. Experiment with different attack, decay and level values, and additional LFO pitch modulation, to create some unusual effects. If your instrument is capable of it, try applying different pitch modulation settings to each voice for yet more twisted bass.
